STRONG RIDE DESPITE STRUGGLE
19 July 2004 - Triumph ValMoto

Craig Jones put in a strong ride on the Triumph Valmoto Daytona 600 at Mallory Park this weekend despite struggling with grip from the outset.

The British Supersport race was as competitive as ever at the 1.39-mile Leicestershire circuit - which is on the doorstep of British manufacturer Triumph’s Hinckley base.

Jones got off to a good start from ninth on the grid. He powered the yellow union jack-liveried machine away from the line with the front-runners and switched between fourth and fifth position for the majority of the race.

A tense moment on lap two saw the 19-year-old and Michael Laverty come together - the wheels of the two motorcycles contacted but both riders escaped unscathed and Jones seized the opportunity to pass Laverty.

As the leading three broke away from the pack towards the end of the 28-lap race, the Triumph Valmoto Daytona 600 led the rest of the field but Jones was still struggling for grip after the wrong tyre choice had been made for the short track.

By lap 20, the pressure of struggling to handle the motorcycle was beginning to show and Jones slipped down to sixth. He was battling with Matt Llewellyn to maintain that position on the final lap when - frustratingly for the talented rider - he crashed out of the race.

“We probably made the wrong tyre choice again - and it cost us,” said Jones. “I was struggling for grip almost straight away. It’s a shame that we didn’t finish but we were battling up at the front even when we were struggling, so that shows real potential, particularly in such a competitive class.

“Stuart Easton returned to Supersport at the weekend from Superbikes and he said that it’s every bit as competitive, if not more so, which says it all. We’ve got a good set-up on the Daytona 600 and I was really dialled in at Mallory Park. As soon as we get the tyre choice right, I think that we’ll start getting onto the podium. “
