GIBERNAU CONTINUES TO BE THE MAN TO BEAT IN THE BMW AWARDS
19 June 2005 - DORNA COMMUNICATIONS

Six races into the MotoGP World Championship, Sete Gibernau trails his archrival Valentino Rossi by a colossal 72 points

However, when it comes to the BMW Awards, Gibernau is still the man to beat.

As a separate title within the MotoGP World Championship, the Award is a measure of the accumulation of the qualification times of each MotoGP rider throughout the season, including the Official Test in Catalunya, and Gibernau is dominating the proceedings, currently 1.355 seconds ahead of the Italian, who occupies second place.

Gibernau has already had three pole positions this season, bearing in mind the pre- season test in which the Spaniard clocked the fastest lap to win a brand new BMW Series 1 car.

Gibernau took his other two pole positions at Shanghai – where he went on to finish fourth in the rain-drenched race – and last weekend at Catalunya where he finished second after being outraced in the final stages by an unstoppable Rossi.

Gibernau´s Telefonica Movistar team-mate Marco Melandri occupies third position in the BMW standings ahead of American Repsol Honda rider Nicky Hayden. Ducati Marlboro man Loris Capirossi completes the top five. BMW Awards
