A NEW HOPE FOR BIAGGI AND REPSOL HONDA

Sunday Max Biaggi took his 109th podium, and his seventh from eight premier class starts at Mugello, which elevates him to third in the championship and gives a new impetus to his season.

Biaggi finished the first lap in sixth place but within fours laps had dispensed with Capirossi and Gibernau, setting a new lap record for the 5.245km circuit of 1m 50.117s on the way. He then commenced an epic duel with arch-rival Rossi in front of a mesmerised partisan crowd. Biaggi and Rossi were in a class of their own and the 33-year-old nosed into the lead on the 17th lap. He held the advantage until three laps from the end when Rossi edged him out to win the race by 0.3 seconds.

“Great race. I’m super happy with the result. We come out from a terrible situation in the best way: stepping on the podium and, more than everything, fighting for the win,” said Biaggi afterwards.

“We almost made it. HRC Team did a very good job and I thank them all: mechanics, suspensions’ guys, tyre people, engineers and, of course, Erv. Thanks to this job the bike was working well immediately, since Friday practice. Now we must keep this pace. I’m not thinking about the championship, I prefer to fight race by race.”

Makoto Tanaka, the Repsol Honda team manager commented:
“A great race and a fantastic result for the whole of Max’s team and for Max himself after a very hard start to the season. His team worked very hard to rebuild his bike after the warm-up crash and had to take a guess for the best set-up. It worked and we look forward to the rest of the season with new hope.”
