FUERTES FUELS THE HEAT IN ITALY
08 June 2005 - BMW Motorrad GB
A sunburnt crowd witnessed one of the most dramatic rides in the history of one-make series racing last Saturday when Sergio Fuertes won the second round of the BMW Motorrad PowerCup championship in Mugello, Italy.
Riding BMW’s 175 bhp K1200 R race machine the Spaniard was first past the chequered flag with a total race time of 29.04.525 seconds. Throughout the 14-lap race, Italian favourite Roberto Panichi and Swedish rider Christer Lindholm challenged Fuertes. In the final stages, the top eight riders (including opening PowerCup race champion Stèphane Mertens) were separated by just 1.1 seconds, but victory went to Fuertes – a real triumph for the sensational Spaniard. “Despite the continuous challenges of the other riders I managed to stay cool,” he said. “I am very, very happy – especially for my Auto Sport Busquets team.” Stèphane Mertens finished the Mugello race in fourth position, retaining his championship lead with 38 points after two rounds. Roberto Panichi was second and Spaniard Arturo Tizon was third. Round three of the 2005 BMW Motorrad PowerCup will be staged in Assen, in the Netherlands, on 25 June.
