RIDERS BLAST INTO MUGELLO FOR SECOND ROUND OF BMW MOTORRAD POWERCUP
05 June 2005 - BMW Motorrad GB
Up to 25, K1200 R race machines are preparing to blast through the sunshine at the Mugello race circuit in Italy this weekend for the second round of the 2005 BMW Motorrad PowerCup.
The opening round of the new one-make series held at Le Mans last month saw BMW’s 175 bhp motorcycles thunder the track at speeds exceeding 155 mph and the top six riders all crossed the line with only 1.7 seconds between them. It was the Belgian veteran Stéphane Mertens who immediately established himself as one of the favourites by beating last year’s BoxerCup champion, Austrian born Thomas Hinterreiter, by a mere 0.135 seconds. After his disappointment last year, it is apparent that the wily Belgian is intent on winning the series prize of a brand new BMW 630i Coupe For the second round of the PowerCup, the sweet smell of Mugello success will be only too familiar to Mertens – especially after having won last year’s BoxerCup race on the same track twelve months ago. However, along with Italian favourite, Roberto Panichi, Thomas Hinterreiter is determined to snap at the heels of his Belgian rival. All Italian eyes will be on Panichi to see if he can hustle the new BMW K1200 R fast enough to achieve a win in front of his home crowd. Having finished in a credible third position in the first round, Panichi will be aiming for a top score of 25 points to climb to the head of the leaderboard. Supporting the prestigious MotoGP World Championship, BMW PowerCup competitors will contest some of the most fierce and ferocious races in Europe – and the Mugello round will be no exception. A flowing track, 5.2km in length, which is tucked away in the smallest of Italian valleys, mean that fans from all over the world regard the Mugello race action as one of the high points of the season. Competitors will be racing with the knowledge that a victory leads one lucky rider a step closer to winning a brand new BMW 630I Coupe. In addition, a BMW x3 2.0D and BMW motorcycle will be presented to the riders who finish overall second and third after the final round of the PowerCup series at Valencia later this year. The 14-lap BMW PowerCup race will take place at 16.30hrs on Saturday 4 June. The UK round of the PowerCup series will be run at Donington Park on Sunday 24 July 2005.
