TRIUMPH HOPING FOR HOME ADVANTAGE
14 July 2004 - Triumph ValMoto

This weekend [17-19 July] Triumph ValMoto heads to its British manufacturer’s home circuit of Mallory Park for the ninth race in the British Supersport Championship calendar.

A recent run of bad luck has made the team even more determined to secure at least one victory with just five of the 13 rounds remaining - and it would be particularly fitting if that victory was at Leicestershire-based Triumph’s local track.

Craig Jones did some testing on the Triumph ValMoto Daytona 600 at the 1.39-mile circuit, near Triumph’s production base in Hinckley, last week with some of the other Supersport competitors. Despite extremely windy conditions, he put in some fast times to match those set by the frontrunners.

The talented 19-year-old has already proved that he is capable of leading the field in the highly competitive class this season and he is confident that he can still put his season back on track. Jones is convinced that the key to the team’s success this weekend will be in qualifying.

“We are focusing on qualifying high up because the difference between the front row and row six on the grid will be minimal just like in the previous rounds,” said the Northwich-based rider.

“If I can set off at the front of the pack it’s a strong start. I honestly believe that if I do well in qualifying a good race result will inevitably follow. It would be great to prove the Daytona 600’s potential in the county where it is made.”

Mallory Park has undergone some changes since the championship was last held there, with the addition of Edwina’s - a new corner for motorcycle use only. The corner is dedicated to the circuit’s long-time managing director Edwina Overend who passed away last year.
