HARRIS HOPES TO EXTEND LEAD
14 July 2004 - Honda Racing

Karl Harris is heading to Mallory Park for the ninth round of the British Supersport Championship with hopes of further extending his 24-point advantage at the top of the championship standings.

The 24-year-old Yorkshireman has proved that he is eminently capable of successfully defending his title, despite the series being more competitive than ever.

Harris played it safe in difficult conditions at Knockhill to bring the HM Plant Honda Racing CBR600RR across the line in second and consolidate his position as championship leader. With just five of the 13 rounds remaining, Harris is confident that he can maintain his lead and add to his impressive four race wins.

Jonathan Rea has been sidelined for the rest of the season due to injuries sustained during morning warm-up at Knockhill. The 18-year-old Red Bull Rookies Honda rider suffered a compound fracture of his left femur and a broken left ankle after crashing at Duffus Dip.

It is unfortunate that the Northern Irish teenager, from Ballyclare, will not be competing in the rest of the series. Rea has had a successful first season in Supersport, finishing in the top ten at the previous two rounds and looked set to finish inside the top ten of the final placings.

Karl Harris (1st / 156 points): “It has been a tough season in Supersport, with a lot of good riders out there, but I believe that I still have the best package and have proved that by regaining the lead in the championship.

“My aim now is to win more races on the HM Plant Honda Racing CBR600RR before the end of the season. I am concentrating on putting as many points as I can between Michael Laverty (currently second) and myself to secure the championship. I’m looking forward to the new circuit at Mallory because it should mean a pretty level playing field for the race.”
