POWERING UP FOR THE POWERCUP
14 May 2005 - BMW Motorrad GB
BMW Motorrad bursts into a new era this weekend at Le Mans with the all-new K1200 R leading the way in the BMW Motorrad PowerCup race series that supports the MotoGP World Championship.
World-class riders will be campaigning BMW’s new four-cylinder 175 bhp race machine in a bid for championship glory. Speeds of up to 170 mph are expected on the quickest circuits across Europe, with the first race taking place on the Bugatti Circuit at Le Mans this weekend. Other rounds of the 2005 PowerCup series will support MotoGP races at Mugello, Assen, Donington (24 July), Sachsenring and Brno, and then follow through to the finale of the season at Valencia, where hundreds of thousands of fans are usually guaranteed spectacular racing, such as that produced by the legendary BMW BoxerCup series over the past few seasons. The last three BoxerCup champions meet in this year’s PowerCup series to challenge for title glory. Reigning BoxerCup Champion Thomas Hinterreiter from Austria returns after his domination of last year''s series; 2003 champion Andy Hofmann (Switzerland) makes a welcome return; and former World Endurance Champion and two-times BoxerCup title winner (2001 and 2002) Belgian Stephane Mertens will be among the favourites to take the inaugural PowerCup crown. Most of the European nations are represented on the grid, making this a truly international series. Teams from Germany, Belgium, Austria, Spain, The Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Italy, Sweden, Ireland, Poland and the Czech Republic comprise the field. As with all BMW Motorrad championships, the prize fund is one of the best in the world. A BMW 630i Coupe awaits the winner of the title, with a BMW X3 2.0d and a BMW motorcycle for second and third places respectively. Former 500cc Grand Prix rider and BMW Ambassador Randy Mamola will be present at all races to oversee, assist and advise: ''I can’t wait to see the K1200 R on track this weekend at Le Mans. I have ridden the bike in testing and it’s going to provide us with some brilliant racing right from the word go. This bike will definitely surprise many people – particularly with how fast it is.'' VIP Guest riders will once more be participating in various races. In the past names such as Luca Cadalora, Jorge Martinez, Angel Nieto, Kevin Schwantz and Jurgen Fuchs have ridden, together with top journalists from the USA to Eastern Europe, including the UK. The 17-lap BMW PowerCup race will take place on Sunday afternoon at 3.30pm.
