EVERTS TAKES NAMUR AGAIN
10 May 2005 - Yamaha Racing
Stefan Everts (Yamaha L&M Motocross Team) added another chapter to his King of Namur succes story. The Belgian won the MX1 GP, scoring a second place in the first heat and a win in the second.
Brian Jorgensen (Yamaha L&M Motocross Team) led his team mate in the opening race with a convincing ride, leading from start to finish. The Dane was fifth in the second race and joined Everts on the podium, claiming seconde overall. Eightfold world champion Everts now leads the MX1 standings with 172 points, Pichon (Honda) is second with 145 points, Jorgensen is ninth. The classic Namur event has been heavy influenced by showers on Saturday, making the challenging track even more treacherous than otherwise. Jorgensen had grabbed the holeshot in front of a 26.000 strong crowd. With the surprising duo of James Noble (Honda) and Marvin Van Daele (Honda) in tow, the outcome was hard to predict. Home favourite Everts worked his way up from as low as eighth to take second behind Jorgensen. Jorgensen, 30, rode his YZ450FM to an uncontested win, leading every single lap and making the best of the muddy, technical track. Everts followed the example of his team mate in the second race. Jorgensen again claimed the holeshot, but Everts quickly made a pass on the opening lap and was never to give away his lead. Ben Townley (KTM) was second and Smets came third ahead of Pichon. The Grand Prix of Wallonie, not only marked Stefan''s third win of the season but will also go down in history as his 82nd career win. Stefan Everts (Yamaha L&M Motocross Team) - Overall winner ''I had not the best start in the first race and on top of that I lost two places when I got stuck in an uphill. When I was back in eighth I just thought how far off another GP win in Namur was! I tried to relax and set up a good strategy for the rest of the race. I made the reflection that the tight lefthander before the steep drop-off leading to ''the chalet'' was a good place to pass and that''s where I passed one rider after the other. Obviously the others knew this for the second race, but it did not matter animore because I was in front from the beginning. I found some good lines around the track and I was always in control even when Townley started pushing near the end. I''m very happy with my win at Namur, it was hard today but it remains a very good place for me.'' Brian Jorgensen (Yamaha L&M Motocross Team) - Fifth overall ''To win the first race was just a blast. Things simply ''clicked'' today like they sometimes just do in racing. Qualifying was not great yesterday, but when we made some adjustments to the suspension this morning we definitely made a huge step in the right direction. I took my time to study the track during warm-up and seeing the MX2 race, that helped me. And than when I got the holeshot my confidence was really good. In the second race some of the lines I had used did not work so well anynore and I lost a couple of places. After twenty minutes or so, I tried some new stuf studying the lines of the others and my lap times dropped again. Overall I''m very happy and I feel that I have turned my season around here. Of course it''s not like I''ll be winning every race from now on, but it surely gives me something to build on for the rest of the season.'' Race classification MX1
