TALMACSI THIRD FOR RED BULL KTM IN CHINA
01 May 2005 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG

Red Bull KTM rider Gabor Talmacsi scored a career-first podium with a calculating ride to finish third in a water-logged Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai circuit today.

The 23-year-old Hungarian led home his teammate Julian Simon in tenth place and Mika Kallio in eleventh.

Starting from pole position as the fastest qualifier Kallio elected to ride a safe race and collect points in the slippery conditions so as to protect his world championship lead.

Kallio now has 50 points, just one point ahead of Fabrizio Lai in the championship standings.

After a fast start from the front row Talmacsi was always in the leading group and settled into third place on lap two behind Mattia Pasini and Lai who then battled for the lead until the finish.

Talmacsi, not wanting to risk a crash, decided to wait until the final three laps to make his move. He was just half a second from the lead when he made two small mistakes on the penultimate lap and settled for third place.

The race was won by Pasini who passed Lai in a bumping, last corner contest.

Kallio and Simon were also in the leading group in the early laps with Simon fourth until lap five. He gradually dropped back as he battled a helmet visor problem.

The race start was delayed by 30 minutes because water flooding at turn six after heavy rain throughout the morning. Conditions eased for the race although the track remained mostly wet but with good grip levels.

The next race is the French GP at Le Mans on May 15.

GABOR TALMACSI #14 - Third - World Championship: 7th/27 points

“I wanted to follow the leaders and not be too aggressive like I was in Estoril at the previous race when I crashed. I was a close third with two laps go but then made two mistakes, but pushed again to hold off Luthi for third. My engine was fast but I was slow in a couple of corners and lost some confidence towards the end but I’m happy for the podium.”

MIKA KALLIO #36 - Eleventh - World Championship: 1st/50 points

“In these conditions I’m satisfied with this result. My plan was always to reduce the risk and score points for the championship. There will be many more dry races and opportunities for the podium. The grip was good in the wet and the bike fast, no problems.”

JULIAN SIMON #60 - Tenth - World Championship: 10th/20 points

“I’m very disappointed. I was up with he leaders early in the race but then I had a problem with my helmet visor and couldn’t see properly in the mist and rain. I wanted a better result than this.”

HARALD BARTOL - Managing and Technical Director

“After qualifying I expected we could have a very good result but the conditions changed with a lot of rain. Gabor deserved his podium and Mika still leads the championship but perhaps we need to look into Julian’s helmet problem to see if there is a solution.”
