Heroes from two and four-wheeled racing honoured in ceremony
Two of motorsport’s greatest heroes were honoured this weekend when the main office and administration building at the Oulton Park circuit in Cheshire was renamed the Fogarty Moss Centre after motorbike racing legend Carl Fogarty and four-wheel hero Stirling Moss. Four-time World Superbike Champion Fogarty was at the historic venue to officially open the newly-named Fogarty Moss Centre before the fourth round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship on Bank Holiday Monday, May 2, and had one of his PETRONAS FP1 World Superbike machines on display. Lancashire-born Fogarty made his racing debut at his local circuit Oulton Park and was a regular race winner there in national level bike racing before stepping up into the world championship in 1991. Sir Stirling Moss is a name synonymous with Oulton Park’s glowing history in motorsport. He won the first ever Oulton Park Gold Cup in 1955 (having started from the back of the grid in a Maserati 250F which only arrived from the factory in Italy that morning) and went on to win five Gold Cup titles in all, a record which has not been surpassed to this day. MotorSport Vision Chief Executive Jonathan Palmer explained his reasons for renaming the building: “I feel strongly that this important building at Oulton Park should be associated with a leading rider and driver for whom the circuit was particularly significant. “Not only is Carl from the North West of England but I am delighted that Oulton was a circuit that was not only his local venue, but one that he loved. Stirling, meanwhile, won the first ever Oulton Park Gold Cup and went on to win five in all!” Fogarty said: “It is always an honour and a privilege to have something named after you, but especially when it’s such an impressive facility and at a track that means so much to me. “Oulton Park is where I had my first ever go at racing back in August 1983 on my dad’s Formula 2 Ducati, and was also my home circuit as I only lived an hour away. It was always my favourite British circuit and I have won there at club, National and British championship level. “Everyone has heard of Sir Stirling Moss and his achievements and I guess he is my equivalent on four wheels so it is also great to be associated with someone who has been so successful in his field.”
