TALMACSI SECOND FASTEST ON HISTORIC FIRST DAY IN CHINA
29 April 2005 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG

Red Bull KTM rider Gabor Talmacsi mastered the wet conditions during the first qualifying session to claim second position on the provisional front row for the Chinese Grand Prix.

This Sunday’s race will be the first-ever world championship road race grand prix to be staged in China at the Shanghai International Circuit.

Talmacsi, from Hungary, was delighted with his performance on a wet track. He was joined on the front row by Spanish teammate Julian Simon who was fourth fastest.

Flying Finn Mika Kallio was the third Red Bull KTM rider in the top ten and was content with the ninth fastest time considering the wet and slippery conditions.

Two weeks ago Kallio won his first-ever GP with a brilliant performance in the Portuguese GP at Estoril and took a cautious approach during day one at an all-new track.

All three KTM riders set their fastest times on their final lap of the session.

The morning free practice session, in which Kallio was fastest, was conducted in dry, warm and humid conditions. The first qualifying session was hit by heavy rain just a few minutes prior to the start.

Earlier, the afternoon time schedule for all grand prix classes had been delayed by two and half hours because of the late arrival of the medical helicopter.

The 5.4 km Shanghai circuit, with a capacity for 200,000 spectators, is the most modern in the world.

GABOR TALMACSI #14 - Second - (2.25.652): 11 laps

“Fantastic, I’m very happy because after crashing out of the Estoril race two weeks ago this is a good comeback for me. I rode alone for most of the session and perhaps with a slipstream I could have been a little faster. The bike is very fast and with good grip, we only had to make some small changes from the morning session; the team has done a great job.”

JULIAN SIMON #60 - Fourth - (2.26.241) : 12 laps

“I like the track very much, it is a great layout with very good facilities. Even in the rain I had good grip and I think I could do better tomorrow now that I understand the track. On the final lap I had a slipstream behind Mika but we hit some other traffic so perhaps this slowed me a little. But it’s OK, I am content.”

MIKA KALLIO #36 - Ninth- (2.27.236) : 10 laps

“This position is OK considering the conditions, I don’t really like the rain that much. I didn’t take any risks today and only pushed hard on the final lap and I feel I have something in reserve for the rest of the weekend. I had no problems with the bike and made no mistakes, no slides so I’m happy.”

HARALD BARTOL - Managing and Technical Director

“We had no problems with the bikes today. The riders are happy and only needed small set-up changes from the morning session. Apart from the rain, I hope it stays like this for the rest of the weekend.”
