WOLVERHAMPTON SPEEDWAY
18 March 2005 - British Speedway Promoters Association

PARRYS International Wolves held the lead for the majority of their season-opening AirTek Challenge fixture at Oxford - but were unable to overcome Greg Hancock and Billy Hamill in the closing stages.

The American duo, re-united at Cowley this season, teamed up for match-clinching 5-1s in both Heats 13 and 15 after Wolves had gone into the final three heats with a four point advantage. The visitors took maximum points from Heat 3 in Steve Johnston''s first ride for the club, the Australian team-riding well with Fredrik Lindgren, and then Hamill crashed out of his opening Silver Machine outing as the lead went up to five points. Oxford fought back and levelled with a 3-2 in Heat 8 after Krzysztof Pecyna had fallen for the second time in the meeting, but Wolves went straight back in front with a 5-1 in an eventful Heat 9 which saw both home riders come to grief. They held that advantage through the next three heats, Lindgren inflicting what would be Hancock''s only defeat of the night in Heat 10 but falling himself two races later. Hancock and Hamill took their first 5-1 in Heat 13, out-trapping Mikael Max and David Howe to level the scores. Johnston managed a last-ditch pass of Tom Madsen to split the Oxford pairing in the penultimate race, but it wasn''t enough to stop the Silver Machine taking the lead - and the Americans then applied the finishing touch over Max and Lindgren in the last race.

OXFORD: Greg Hancock 12+2, Billy Hamill 11+1, Travis McGowan 7+1, Niels-Kristian Iversen 7+1, Tom P Madsen 5+1, Lukas Dryml 3+1, Kjastas Poudzuks 2.

WOLVERHAMPTON: David Howe 8, Mikael Max 8, Steve Johnston 7, Magnus Karlsson 6+2, Fredrik Lindgren 6+2, Ronnie Correy 4+2, Krzysztof Pecyna 2.
