MOTORCYCLISTS TO CONVERGE FOR BIKESAFE WEEKEND
31 March 2005 - BikeSafe
Motorcyclists and motorcycle fans from around the country will converge in Gloucestershire this weekend for the national annual BikeSafe event.
BikeSafe, being held this year at Cheltenham Racecourse, and sponsored by Cheltenham Motorcycles, is being organised by Gloucestershire Constabulary with the biking world to try and reduce the number of motorcycle casualties on the nation''s roads. The event has previously been hosted by other British forces but this year is the first that the event has been held in Gloucestershire, and Inspector Paul Morrissey said it was a real coup for the county. ''Motorcyclists and others with an interest in biking are in for a real treat at BikeSafe,'' Inspector Morrissey said. ''Not only do we have a huge array of exhibitors and entertainment, including stands from Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Triumph, Ducati, BMW and Harley Davidson, but we will also have three top Honda superbikers Michael Rutter, Karl Harris and Ryuichi Kiyonari there. ''It will be an enjoyable event for all the family, with lots to keep the children occupied. ''There is also of course a serious side because we will be holding assessed ride outs to educate on rider safety and skill, and the whole aim of the event is to reduce the unacceptably high number of riders injured and killed on our roads every year.'' BikeSafe is being held between 10am and 5pm on April 2 and 3 and entry is free. Among the attractions at BikeSafe are: Honda Racing''s Michael Rutter, Karl Harris, and Ryuichi Kiyonari (who won the first two races of the British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch last weekend) being interviewed by motorsport presenter Martin Bennett and speaking to fans. Prizes including a riding suit, boots and gloves from Hein Gericke and vouchers to spend in their Cheltenham motorbike shop, two VIP Superbike tickets from Team Crescent Suzuki, and a limited edition Ducati year book. A Honda track for children to ride mini motorbikes on - complete with their own mini driving licence! Free expert tuition from some of the UK''s top instructors will be available, including over 60 police motorcyclists from all over the country and trainers from large manufacturers. The ride outs will cover a variety of local routes. Don''t forget to bring your license to take part. A Great Western Railway train running from the racecourse out to Winchcombe and Toddington. A vintage motorcycle display. A Richard Read lorry with motorbikes displayed to show the limited view lorry drivers have of motorcycles from their driving position. The county air ambulance will be in attendance between 10am and 12 noon each day, highlighting the number of motorcyclists in need of this facility each year. The event is being sponsored by Cheltenham Motorcycles.
