16 March 2005 - British Speedway Promoters Association
WOLVERHAMPTON launch their 2005 season with exciting Airtek Challenge matches against Oxford.
The first leg is at Cowley Stadium on Thursday March 17 and the return is at Wolverhampton''s Monmore Green track on Monday March 21. --- CHRIS Van Straaten has admitted for the first time that he came close to signing Billy Hamill from bitter rivals Cradley Heath. The Wolverhampton promoter turned his back on the move because of the rivalry between the two clubs - and the hope that Cradley would find a new home. Now Hamill will line-up with his new club Oxford alongside another former Cradley Star, Greg Hancock, against Wolves in the Airtek Challenge first leg at Cowley on Thursday. Van Straaten said: ''We did hold talks and I was keen on Billy, but I was brought up on the terraces at Cradley Heath and there would have been so much bad feeling. ''I also hoped that Cradley would return and Hamill and Hancock should have gone back there - sadly it wasn''t to be, so it is with some regret that I didn''t go ahead and sign Hamill.'' --- OXFORD: Greg Hancock, Travis McGowan, Niels-Kristian Iversen, Lukas Dryml, Billy Hamill, Tom P Madsen, Kjastas Poudzhuks. WOLVERHAMPTON: Mikael Max, Ronnie Correy, Fredrik Lindgren, Steve Johnston, David Howe, Magnus Karlsson, Krzystof Pecyna.
