EVERTS ON THE PODIUM IN SWEDEN
05 July 2004 - Yamaha Racing

Yamaha L&M Motocross Team rider Stefan Everts scored third overall at the Swedish Grand Prix in Uddevalla.

Yamaha L&M Motocross Team rider Stefan Everts scored third overall at the Swedish Grand Prix in Uddevalla. Two-time world Michaël Pichon (Honda) continued his run of good form this weekend and raced to overall victory at the fast but muddy track. Denmark’s Brian Jorgensen (Honda) was second overall. Everts maintains his leading position in the MX1 championship, holding a 97-point advantage over Pichon.

Race one saw Kevin Strijbos (Suzuki) launch into an early race lead followed closely by Brian Jorgensen and Michaël Pichon. Stefan Everts had a bad start, but he quickly came back to fourth. Despite courageous attempts by the leading bunch to catch the on form Strijbos, positions remained deadlocked right until the chequered flag. Strijbos took the win from Jorgensen, Pichon in third and Stefan Everts in fourth.

Disaster struck Kevin Strijbos in race two, and as the gate dropped the Belgian rider became entangled with Antti Pyrhonen (TM) and crashed within meters of the start gate. Meanwhile Brian Jorgensen took the holeshot, followed by his team mate Michaël Pichon, Swedish rider Joakim Eliasson and Stefan Everts in fourth.

Everts soon disposed of Eliasson and moved into third, and then set about chasing the two leading Hondas. Pichon moved into the race lead on lap five and Everts followed his progress moving up to second, but a slow speed crash four laps later handed second place back to Jorgensen. The seven-time world champion remounted and pushed very hard to catch the Dane and made a pass on lap fifteen to finish the race in second place to Michaël Pichon. Third place went to Brian Jorgensen followed by Steve Ramon (KTM) in fourth and Yoshitaka Atsuta in fifth – his best individual GP race result of the season.

The 12th round of the championship takes place at Locket in the Czech Republic on Sunday 1st August.

Stefan Everts (Yamaha L&M Motocross Team) – third overall
“I’m not so happy with my weekend and I didn’t really feel comfortable on the track and didn’t really manage to find the best race lines today. I messed up both of my starts and made small mistakes in both races which affected my overall result. I had a lot on my mind this weekend with contract negotiations for next year, plus my wife will have our first baby in three weeks time and I think these worries took some energy away from me. I ended the day losing five points to Pichon in the championship so that’s not so good, although I’m still 97 points ahead of him.”

MX2 : Chiodi and Bartolini on the podium

Round: 11 - Grand Prix of Sweden
Circuit: Uddevalla
Date: 4 July 2004
Crowd: 16000
Temp: 20ºC
Weather: Muddy

The Swedish GP saw the first podium of the season for Italian veteran Andrea Bartolini, while Team Yamaha RZ colleague Alessio Chiodi took another second. The hotly contested MX2 class produced some exciting racing in Uddevalla, but it was the young Ben Townley (Champ KTM) who took the overall win. Patrick Caps (Team Yamaha Evolution) was fifth overall. Townley leads the championship now with 427 points, South-African Rattray is second with 350 points, Australian Andrew McFarlane(Yamaha UK Race Team) is fourth.

The opening race of the day was marked by early crashes from fast starters Andersson and Cairoli (Team Yamaha De Carli). Andrea Bartolini is the first leader, but Townley quickly took command to pull away from the rest of the field. Townley wins the race, Chiodi comes home second and Bartolini rides his YZ250F to third. McFarlane runs a solid race in fourth, but a crash a couple of laps before the end of the race dropped him to sixth.

The second race of the day sees another early crash, with again home rider Andersson involved. Chiodi takes the lead, but has to settle for second when Townley makes the pass. Scottsman Stephen Sword (Kawasaki) finishes third. Bartolini is fourth in front of Cairoli and Caps. Meanwhile Team Yamaha De Carli’s Claudio Federici had a disappointing day and was unable to back up his first race 7th place with a good result in race two. Unfortunately the Italian crashed hard at the start of race two and was unable to finish the race due to bike damage. Andrew McFarlane suffered a similar fate and although his race 6th place was promising, technical problems in race two forced him out of the race.

The 12th round of the championship takes place at Locket in the Czech Republic on Sunday 1st August.

Alessio Chiodi (Team Yamaha RZ) – 2nd overall
“It was very difficult to catch Ben Townley today because he was riding so well, but I’m very happy with my two second places and of course happy to be on the podium. It’s not easy racing against riders of this level but my training and hard work is beginning to pay off. It was really important to get good starts here in Sweden and luckily my bike is very good and rewarded me with good positions in the first turn which of course makes life easier in the race.”

Andrea Bartolini (Team Yamaha RZ) – 3rd overall
“I’m very happy with my overall result today because so far this year has been very difficult with crashes and small injuries. My confidence is now improving though, and I think this shows in my results and I feel that it’s possible to continue with this form for the remaining races of this season. This will be my last year racing in the motocross GPs. I started racing in 1986 and so now I need to dedicate more time to my family.”

Andrew McFarlane (Yamaha UK Race Team) – 13th overall
“The first race wasn’t so bad. I came from a poor position on the start gate to fourth place in the first turn which I held onto for most of the race. Unfortunately I got a rock caught under the rear brake though which caused me all sorts of problems and I eventually finished the race in sixth. I didn’t get as good a start in the second race, but the track conditions were a bit better and I was able to find some good race lines but I developed a problem with the bike which affected the left turns and this ended any hopes I had of a good overall result.”

Claudio Federici (Team Yamaha De Carli) –16th overall
“The first race wasn’t so bad for me. I got quite a good start and managed to maintain sixth place for almost the entire race but I made a small mistake on lap sixteen and Stephen Sword passed me. I really wanted to get another good start in race two and although my drive up the start straight was good, another rider hit me in the first turn and this caused me to crash. I remounted and tried hard to ride the bike, but the handlebars were bent and I had to retire from the race. Overall it wasn’t such a good day for me.”
