TWO WHEELED ACTION KICKS OFF 2005 ACTION AT CROFT

Following the cancellation of the proposed rallycross meeting earlier in the month due to the inclement weather, the 2005 racing season eventually gets underway at Croft Circuit near Darlington this weekend with the opening round of the North East Motorcycle Racing Club Championship held over both days.

With a capacity entry for solo competitors and a healthy contingent of sidecars, the action is sure to be plentiful in the various classes throughout the weekend as the first of the four round series which also includes rounds at Croft on 30/31 July and 8/9 October as well as a round at East Fortune in Scotland on 21/22 May.

New innovations for this year include a change in the way the club’s major trophies will be won. The Ken Redfern Trophy, The Laird of Croft and The Mac Hobson Trophy will be awarded to the highest points scorers in each class at the end of the season rather than being decided on individual races.

Gunning for glory in the opening round will be favourites Chris Coates from Gateshead, David Bell from Chester le Street and Sunnyside’s Colin Gelston whilst fellow Tynesider Keith Pringle makes the move into the Open class after dominating the Sound of Thunder series in recent seasons.

Rainton’s Tony Thirkell and Roy King (Honda) will start as favourites for sidecar honours but can expect stiff opposition from the Penrith pairing of Tony Baker and Jimmy White (Yamaha) throughout the weekend.

With classes to include Sound of Thunder, Formula 400, Formula 600, Classics, Forgotten Era and F125 to compliment the open class races, there should be plenty of excitement on track.

Practice gets underway at 9.30 on Saturday with racing immediately after and the action starts at noon on Sunday. Adult admission is just £10.00 on both days with accompanied children under 15 admitted free on both days.
