HARRIS AND REA IN TOP TEN
03 July 2004 - Honda Racing

With the second qualifying session cancelled due to the adverse track conditions at Knockhill, the British Supersport Championship grid positions were determined from this morning’s first period.

The abandoned practice left Karl Harris and Jonathan Rea on the second and third rows of the grid respectively on their Honda CBR600RRs.

HM Plant Honda Racing’s Harris won at last year’s corresponding event and will be looking for a repeat performance in tomorrow’s 28-lap race at the Fife circuit. The 24-year-old defending British Supersport Champion qualified in sixth position in a time of 52.318 seconds – only 0.334 seconds down on pole position Michael Laverty.

His Red Bull Rookies Honda team-mate Rea took his fourth top ten qualifying position of the season in his debut year in the Supersport class. The talented 17-year-old Ballyclare rider will be looking to take his third consecutive top ten finish of the season at Knockhill in what has already been a promising start to his four-stroke racing career.

Karl Harris: “It’s a shame that we weren’t able to go out this afternoon as I was aiming to fine-tune the settings on my HM Plant Honda Racing CBR600RR. We’ve got a few things to try in warm-up tomorrow morning, but I’m confident that I’m going to be on the pace. I don’t mind if it’s wet – as I proved at Brands Hatch two weeks ago – and I’ll be going for my fifth win of the season if everything goes according to plan.”

Jonathan Rea: “We’ve continued the good progress that we made on the Red Bull Rookies Honda CBR600RR at the previous two rounds. That has helped me to grow in confidence and I’m really beginning to make an impression on the Supersport class during qualifying and over race distance. I’ve got to get a better start to the race and then I’ll hopefully be going for my best result of the season.”

Qualifying times: 1. M. Laverty (Ducati) 51.984; 2. K. Murphy (Honda) 52.145; 3. P. Young (Honda) 52.155; 4. P. Riba (Kawasaki) 52.280; 5. C. Crutchlow (Honda) 52.300; 6. K. Harris (HM Plant Honda Racing) 52.318; 7. L. Camier (Honda) 52.361; 8. M. Llewellyn (Ducati) 52.581; 9. L. Quigley (Suzuki) 52.591; 10. J. Rea (Red Bull Rookies Honda) 52.591
