AGILENT TECHNOLOGIES'' VEE PRO HELPS T&M WORLD''S 2005 ENGINEER OF THE YEAR DEVELOP DRIVERLESS MOTORCYCLE Graphical Programming Tool Solves Problems, Is Easy to Use as Inventors Ready Innovative Entry for DARPA Grand Challenge 2005 Race Agilent Technologies Inc. today announced that Anthony Levandowski, 2005 winner of Test & Measurement World magazine''s Test Engineer of the Year, uses Agilent''s Visual Engineering Environment (VEE) Pro to collect data to test his autonomous motorcycle. Levandowski and his team have entered the driverless motorcycle in the 2005 Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Grand Challenge, scheduled for October. The competition, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, requires unmanned vehicles to cross up to 175 miles of rugged terrain in the U.S. southwest in less than 10 hours. The Blue Team, comprised of Levandowski and other engineering students from UC Berkeley, entered the 2004 DARPA Grand Challenge with ''Ghostrider,'' the world''s first autonomous motorcycle, which incorporates multiple unique and advanced technologies. All other competitors designed traditional four-wheeled vehicles. Levandowski''s team was one of the 24 finalists to compete in the trials and race that took place in March 2004. Agilent VEE Pro, named one of EDN Magazine''s ''Hot 100 Products of 2004,'' is a highly intuitive, graphical programming environment. With its open architecture that supports industry-standard instrument communications, PC-standard software components and embedded MATLAB(R) functionality, VEE Pro enables designers to create tests quickly so they can focus on engineering tasks, rather than programming. ''Our research team found VEE Pro simple to use but extremely powerful at helping us solve problems quickly, and its graphical interface minimizes programming, making it very simple to use,'' said Levandowski. ''We are very encouraged by the interest and sponsorship of Agilent in our motorcycle''s ongoing design and deployment. Our stable, two-wheel vehicle has some very exciting and unique future applications for safety, control and mobility.''
