SAFE SPEED WELCOMES SKILLDRIVER PROJECT
24 February 2005 - Safe Speed

Safe Speed applauds the launch of a new driver safety web site called ''SkillDriver''. SkillDriver explains the critical skills, attitudes and techniques on which road safety is founded and signposts the route to improvement.

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign
(www.safespeed.org.uk) said: ''The SkillDriver approach to driver safety is EXACTLY what we need to drive down crashes and lead the world in road safety again. Using all of the SkillDriver methods will deliver the lowest possible crash risk. Road safety in the UK has completely lost its direction and SkillDriver illuminates the route ahead. It is essential reading for all drivers and should be force fed to ministers, researchers and local authority road safety officers.''

Steve Haley, originator of the SkillDriver project
(www.skilldriver.org) said: ''The old view of driving skill is far too narrowly focused on ''car control'' - that''s only where safety begins. We have always known that driver error causes nearly all deaths and casualties. The crucial mystery has always been how a driver''s ''thinking'' works to deliver low risk.''

Steve continues: ''Now it is revealed - a clear new set of skills that drastically reduce risk. With this in sight, it is no longer acceptable to neglect the huge safety benefits that come from having the right skills. Drivers can now reverse the fatal dumbing-down, and take strong control of their own safety!''
