BERU EXPANDS DEVELOPMENT FACILITIES IN LUDWIGSBURG
24 February 2005 - BERU
Automotive supplier BERU AG will expand its research and development facilities in Ludwigsburg. The company’s R&D and test center is to be enlarged with a new extension building.
With this expansion, the company will gain about one thousand square meters of usable space. In addition to quality management and quality control, the new building will also accommodate a part of the development activities on glow plugs for diesel engines as well as applications technology activities. A key element of the extension is a new test and measurement container and test benches known as the “cold chamber” for the product groups of spark plugs and the ISS instant starting system for diesel engines, where cold-start tests will be possible under ambient conditions of minus 30 degrees Celsius. There will also be a new prototype workshop for installing equipment in test vehicles. The areas of product and quality control will also be expanded. This investment is a reflection of customers’ demands for more and more research and development work to be carried out by BERU. Construction work will start in July 2005. The new building should be completed and put into operation by the end of the financial year in March 2006. The decision to expand R&D capacities in Ludwigsburg was approved by the new Supervisory Board of BERU AG in its latest meeting. BERU will invest a total of nearly €5 million in this expansion in the current and the next financial year. The Chairman of the Executive Board of BERU AG, Marco von Maltzan, explained the significance for the Ludwigsburg location: “This investment decision is fully in line with our long-term policy of maintaining BERU’s competitiveness by means of permanent innovation. Each year we invest around 10% of our sales revenues for this purpose. This investment rate is one of the highest in the industry. In Ludwigsburg, we are expanding our R&D capacities in diesel cold-start technology and ignition technology for gasoline engines. We are delighted that this also enables us to create several highly qualified new jobs.” Photographs: Photos of the current R&D and testing center and of a model of the extension building can be viewed on the Internet at http://www.beru.com/pressroom.
