BRITISH SPEEDWAY: CONFERENCE LEAGUE STATEMENT
03 February 2005 - British Speedway Promoters Association
CONFERENCE League clubs will adopt a grading system for next season - in a bid to bring through more youngsters.
The system will mean that every club must use two rookies and there will be a severe restriction on top grade riders at the veteran stage of their careers. Club chairman met at the British Speedway offices in Rugby to thrash out the proposal which is sure to ignite plenty of debate amongst the third tier of the sport. Conference League co-ordinator Peter Morrish said: ''It''s widely recognised that Peter Oakes is doing a good job at GB Under-21 level and we want to see more youngsters in the Conference League. ''The grading system encourages teams to go for more young riders with the potential to learn and develop.'' The Conference League will again operate three different competitions - the league itself, alongside the Conference Trophy and Knockout Cup. Newcomers Scunthorpe have been confirmed as members of all three tournaments at their Normanby Road venue. And Carmarthen have been given a fortnight to secure a new lease with their landlords at the United Counties Showground before entering. CONFERENCE LEAGUE LINE-UP: Armadale, Boston, Buxton, Mildenhall, Newport, Oxford, Rye House, Scunthorpe, Sittingbourne, Stoke, Weymouth, Wimbledon. Provisional: Carmarthen. CONERENCE TROPHY: North: Armadale, Buxton, Scunthorpe, Stoke. South: Boston, Mildenhall, Weymouth, Wimbledon. Top Two from each group go to semi-finals. KNOCKOUT CUP: Boston, Buxton, Mildenhall, Newport, Oxford, Rye House, Scunthorpe, Stoke, Weymouth, Wimbledon.
