MOTORCYCLE PARKING PROTEST RIDE - HUNSTANTON
10 March 2004 - MAG UK
Hundreds of motorcyclists rode into the East Anglian seaside town of Hunstanton on Saturday 6th March to protest against the new fees for bike parking on The Lower Green.
The riders, members of the Motorcycle Action Group - East Anglia Region swelled the coffers of seafront traders who reported a good day’s business as a result of the mass ride. The bikers are also concerned about the prohibition of parking motorcycles on The Promenade where they provide an interesting feature for promenaders without obstructing their movement. Residents and early holidaymakers enjoyed the biggest free bike show Hunstanton has ever seen as a result of the ride, and many expressions of support were made by the spectators. Mr Bob Davies, Chairman of Hunstanton United Businesses (HUB), joined MAG in adding his support to the protest, and to express traders’ concerns at the potential loss of business if bikers were to be discouraged from visiting the resort. Mr Richard Townsley the local Tourism Manager was not available to meet the MAG delegation. The furthest distance travelled by a rider taking part was 175 miles, some riders having come from as far away as Wakefield in Yorkshire, Birmingham and London. It is estimated that bikers visiting Hunstanton spent around £100,000 pa a substantial source of income to the town’s business community whose income would be jeopardised if the motorcyclists were to go elsewhere this summer. nb: MAG’s next visit to Hunstanton is timed for 11 April 2004. This will be a Charity Ride Out delivering cds, cassettes and videos to The Sandcastle Holiday/Short Break Centre for guests with special needs, which is based in Hunstanton.
