CONSISTENT YOUNG BRITS MAINTAIN BOXERCUP CHALLENGE
28 June 2004 - BMW Motorrad GB
Unlike last year, when rain halted the Assen, Holland round of the International BMW Motorrad BoxerCup, this year’s race took place in excellent track conditions.
The support race for MotoGP provided thousands of Dutch fans (wearing the orange replica shirts of their national football team) with an all-action battle of thundering intensity. While series leader Thomas Hinterreiter (Austria) made a successful break to win the race and extend his series lead, fierce and uncompromising combat was being engaged behind him. With everything down to some desperate riding, fierce braking and brave overtaking at the last corner, Markus Barth just snatched second ahead of France’s Sebastien Legrelle. Meanwhile, BMW Motorrad Great Britain’s bright young racing talents, Richard Cooper (21) Barry Burrell (17) and Calvin Hogan (19) were fighting just as hard to sustain their challenge for riders under the age of 21 in the integrated YoungStar Championship. Currently in second place in the competition to discover the best of Europe’s young talent, Richard Cooper qualified sixth on the grid. Unfortunately, Cooper failed to capitalise, was slow off the line and found himself embroiled in a mid-field battle with a number of battle-scarred pros. Despite this, the diminutive young Brit outwitted the YoungStar current leader Guillaume Dietrich to grab 11th. Great team riding by Barry Burrell and Calvin Hogan saw them finish just behind “Cooperman” and add to the points gap between him and the rest of the challengers. At the chequered flag, the ebullient Brits finished in 11th, 13th and 14th respectively. The BMW Motorrad Great Britain Team Manager Mark Fisher was delighted: “Although Richard was hoping for a better result after qualifying so well, he rode magnificently to beat Dietrich and reduce the [Frenchman’s] lead,” he said. “And what can I say about Barry and Calvin? Their team riding was superb – the best yet.”
