MAJOR REFURBISHMENT PLANNED FOR NORTHBOUND BLACKWALL TUNNEL

Transport for London Street Management has awarded a £2.1 m contract forthe design and supervision of a major refurbishment of the NorthboundBlackwall Tunnel to Mott MacDonald consultants.

The project will significantly improve the tunnel infrastructure, upgrading the fire and life safety systems and enhancing the communications and lighting systems. Both civil and M&E components of the tunnel will be upgraded.

Design works will commence in January 2005 with construction expected to begin early in 2006.
