The recent round the world motorcycling adventure of Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman has been widely reported and stirred significant interest in the media and two-wheel world.
Recent research carried out for the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) by Geoff Crowther at Huddersfield University examined how motorcyclists engage in adventurous leisure activity and found that off-road areas, race tracks and adventure trips can be the setting for a ‘fantasy’ where using a bike or scooter can create many positive experiences and emotions. The study observed the experience of adventure motorcycling brings: · A sense of playfulness · A feeling of being in control · A feeling of escape · A sense of freedom · An identity Geoff Crowther commented, “Adventure, involves an intense and positive experiences. Increased participation in adventurous leisure experiences has contributed to the recent rise in the popularity of motorcycling in the UK. “Motorcycling is an activity that takes courage, virtuosity, adventure, endurance and the capacity to attain distinction.” At this year’s International Motorcycle and Scooter show one of the stars of the Long Way Round, Charley Boorman said, “''It has been an incredible opportunity to talk ourselves out of our normal lives and experience the most incredible things on our particular journey. The freedom of riding a bike for 113 days around the world is unmissable''. Craig Carey-Clinch, MCI’s Director of Public Affairs said, “ The increase in sales of adventure sports bikes reaffirms these findings that people want climb on their bikes and attain more from the experience than simply travelling from A to B. “ Riding off-road, touring holidays or day at a race track are just some of the ways people can develop their skills as a rider. “People without a licence can also participate in the off-road sector. Thrill seekers and spirited individuals who are considering getting a bike could start off-road and maybe try something like trials or motorcross.”
