BENNETTS WARNS WELSH BIKERS TO STAY ALERT
22 April 2004 - Bennetts

A survey conducted by one of the UK’s major players specialising in motorcycle insurance, Bennetts Insurance Services, has found that more than a third of motorcyclists in Wales will venture out onto country roads this bank holiday weekend despite the fact that, according to ROSPA, this is where one quarter of motorcycle casualties occur.

On one of the busiest weekends of the year, Bennetts is advising bikers to stay alert whilst out on the open roads. For many leisure motorcyclists May Bank Holiday weekend is the time when bikes are uncovered after the long winter months and once again taken to the roads.

The Bennetts survey found that 59% of motorcyclists in Wales have unexpectedly encountered slow moving traffic when taking a bend on a country road, and more than one in ten bikers in Wales have, or have very nearly, had a crash when encountering slow-moving traffic on a country road.

The milder weather and extra days holiday will see an increased number of both motorcyclists and motorists on country roads. Motorcyclists need to be especially cautious of the dangers posed by unexpected stationary traffic, as well as by motorists suddenly appearing from around blind bends.

Other potential dangers in the countryside include slow-moving tractors, farm vehicles emerging from a junction into the path of a motorcyclist, farm animals roaming on the roads, narrow lanes and unmarked road surfaces.

Managing Director of Bennetts, Matthew Gledhill, said: “We want bikers to have fun and to take advantage of the long weekend, but to also stay safe. We would simply advise caution – be aware of dangers that may be lurking round the next bend.”

In addition to the unusually busy country roads, biker ‘hot spots’ and the surrounding roads will also be busy over the Bank Holiday weekend. Popular biker destinations in Wales include:

• The sea front at Aberystwyth
• The central bus park at Abergavenny
• Various points on the A44
• ‘Dil’s Diner’ off the A5 in Betws-Y-Coed

Matthew Gledhill said: “These biker ‘hot spots’ make excellent meeting points for bikers out to enjoy the open road. Other motorists may want to bear in mind that the surrounding roads are likely to be packed with bikers!”
