99% OF BIKERS’ SAFETY THREATENED ON THE ROAD
22 May 2004 - Bennetts

Bennetts, one of the UK’s major players specialising in motorcycle insurance, are to launch the ‘Bikers For Bus Lanes’ campaign at The BMF Show, Peterborough, this weekend (22nd and 23rd May), highlighting the major problems motorcyclists encounter with cars on the road.

In the ‘Bennetts Biker Report’, a survey of bikers that provides an authoritative insight into the views of the modern day biker, 99% of bikers admitted that they have experienced cars pulling out in front of them, with one in two stating that this is a frequent hazard.

The research uncovered that bikers believe the biggest danger on the roads is the inconsiderate attitude of other road users, and 74% of bikers believe that allowing bikers to use bus lanes would improve biker safety.

Allowing motorbikes to use bus lanes will reduce the number of accidents on the road and also benefit car drivers as motorbikes will not be weaving in and out of traffic and difficult to spot.

Bikers are being encouraged to visit the Bennetts stand at the BMF show or to logo onto www.bennetts.co.uk to lend their support to the campaign.

Matthew Gledhill, Director of Bennetts, said: “At Bennetts the safety of motorcyclists and the condition of their bikes are two of our main priorities. We want to speak and champion causes on behalf of bikers, which is why we are launching our latest campaign at the BMF Show to allow bikers to use bus lanes. The ‘Bennetts Biker Report’ has uncovered bikers true feelings which is why we feel it is natural to highlight their concerns.”

Key findings from the ‘Bennetts Biker Report’:

• 99% of motorcyclists have experienced cars pulling out on them (50% frequently and 38% on several occasions)
• 40% of these occasions have or very nearly caused an accident
• Men and women are as bad as each other at pulling out but women are more likely to apologise to motorcyclists
• 55% think biking is becoming more dangerous
• 55% feel this is due to the volume of traffic and 30% due to less respect from car drivers
• 50% have had an accident (20% a serious one)
• 42% said car drivers were to blame for these accidents
• 72% of bikers think they should be able to use bus lanes
• 74% believe using bus lanes would improve biker safety
• 18% cite careless drivers as their biggest concern

The ‘Bennetts Biker Report’ is an independent survey consisting of in-depth interviews with more than 500 bikers across the UK. The survey was carried out in October 2003.
