NEW Wolverhampton signing Steve Johnston made a superb start to the Australian Championship with second place in Gosford.

Johnston, a surprise signing by the Monmore club, qualified for the final with two wins and three second places in his 12-point haul from five outings. He then finished behind Swindon''s Leigh Adams, the most concistent rider in British racing, to collect 18-points with Belle Vue''s Jason Lyons third and Travis McGowan of Oxford fourth. The series moves to Newcastle Showground on Saturday, January 1. TOP EIGHT: Leigh Adams 20, STEVE JOHNSTON 18, Jason Lyons 17, Travis McGowan 16, Mark Lemon 15, Craig Watson 14, Adam Shields 13, Charlie Gjedde 12.
