BENNETTS UNVEILS WORST ROADS IN THE UK FOR MOTORCYCLISTS
27 May 2004 - Bennetts
Bennetts, one of the UK’s major players specialising in motorcycle insurance, have unveiled the 10 worst roads in the UK as part of a survey of motorcyclists for their “Stop The Rough Ride” campaign.
Roads from across the country were nominated with the B6462 in Pensitone, Yorkshire, being officially unveiled as the worst road in the UK. Nick Wiley (47), a General Manager who lives along the road, said: ''The B6462 has been a hazardous route for some time now. I have been riding motorcycles since I was aged 16 and have to take extra precautions on the stretch from Penistone town centre to Springvale. The road is in need of urgent repair with pot holes littered along the route - the road surface has actually disintegrated in places and is heavily used by people travelling to Sheffield.” The campaign, in association with the BMF and supported by the likes of World Superbike Champion Neil Hodgson and Pop Idol judge Neil Fox, aims to improve the condition of roads for bikers by asking them to name and shame the worst roads in their area. Bennetts surveyed motorcyclists online at their official website (www.bennetts.co.uk) and also at high profile shows including the International Motorcycle and Scooter Show at the NEC and the MCN London Motorcycle Show at the Alexandra Palace. Bennetts unveiled the “Stop The Rough Ride” campaign as the first to come from the ‘Bennetts Biker Report’ – a survey of bikers that provides an authoritative insight into the views of the modern day biker. In the ‘Bennetts Biker Report’, bikers were asked what their biggest issue or concern as a rider was, with respondents most commonly highlighting the poor condition of some roads in the UK. 95% of bikers have had a problem with the roads - 61% of bike riders frequently encounter problems with potholes and manhole covers when riding, 48% having difficulties with road repairs and 26% with loose gravel. “Stop The Rough Ride” Campaign Survey – Top 10 Worst Roads: 1. We want to speak on behalf of bikers - which is why we decided to launch the ‘Stop The Rough Ride’ campaign and unveil the worst roads in the UK according to bikers.” Voting for the ‘Stop The Rough Ride’ campaign took place between Nov 03 - April 04.
