ROAD USERS ADVISED TO TAKE EXTRA CARE IN HIGH WINDS AND HEAVY RAIN
23 December 2004 - Highways Agency

Drivers, especially those using the highest routes in Northern England, are being advised to drive with extra care in the high winds which are affecting the country.

Heavy rain showers are also expected in the north west today and will spread to the rest of the country on Friday.

The Met Office expects strong winds to continue to affect the country this afternoon and into Christmas Eve. Conditions are expected to be worst in Northern regions especially on routes on high ground, including the M6, M62, A66, and A69. Heavy rain is forecast across most of the country on Christmas Eve with the strongest winds expected in the southwest.

Drivers are reminded to slow down and keep their distance from other vehicles in heavy rain, and to take care in the strong, gusty winds. Motorcyclists, cyclists and drivers of high-sided vehicles are advised to take extra care.

The Highways Agency, which manages, operates and improves motorways and all-purpose trunk roads in England, offers the following advice to drivers:

* Heavy rain and spray are likely to lead to reduced visibility. Slow down and keep well back from the vehicle travelling in front - it takes longer to stop in wet weather.

* Check the latest information on weather and road conditions before you set off, and during your journey.

* Drivers of high-sided vehicles or towing caravans, and those on motorbikes, should take extra care when strong winds are forecast.

* After driving through floodwater, test your brakes before you continue driving at higher speed.

The Highways Agency will be working with the police to ensure that disruption from any accidents and incidents is minimised and traffic kept moving. Where road lanes or carriageways have to be closed for safety reasons after heavy rain, we will work together with local authorities to establish diversion routes, where appropriate, to minimise the impact to drivers.
