NATIONAL BIKESAFE MOTORCYCLE SHOW
23 December 2004 - BikeSafe

Cheltenham Racecourse, April 2nd/3rd 2005BikeSafe is a national initiative run by Police forces around the United Kingdom who work with the motorcycle industry to help reduce the number of rider casualties.

Gloucestershire Constabulary are, for the first year, hosting the National BikeSafe Motorcycle Show 2005 at Cheltenham Racecourse in April. PC Martyn Hillier and Inspector Paul Morrissey assessed the KSI (Killed/Seriously Injured) figures for Gloucestershire and decided to run an event to assist in reducing them. BikeSafe stages an annual event and the Gloucestershire officers requested to host it in this county.

Previously the national event was held in Warwickshire. Gloucestershire’s BikeSafe team want to increase the visitor numbers by providing a show rather than a purely safety focused event. In order to attract visitors the event will be promoted nationally through motorcycle trade press and through national exhibitions in the run up to next April. The racecourse is providing a stand and 4600 m˛ of land in order for manufacturers’ rigs and show materials to display.

Gloucestershire Constabulary has been running 2 day BikeSafe training (in-house) since 1978. The course is specifically for those riders who have already passed their DOT test and want to improve their standards/ability. The first day is classroom based theory; covering thinking in a systematic manner, use of observation, gears and braking, bends and corners and over taking. On the second day the group goes out on the ‘open road’ and puts the theory into pratice, introducing the participants to the police style of riding. The April show is an extension of this training and hopefully will provide a fun day out for family members as well as motorbike enthusiasts eager to ride out on the new models.

The BikeSafe show will offer test rides of the latest bikes and assessed rides across varied routes, with police motorcyclists volunteering from all over England and Wales. The aim is to pass on knowledge, skills and experience to members of the public in order for them to get more enjoyment out of their motorbike, in a safe way. We are requesting some big names in the motorcycle world to attend the event to endorse the importance of rider safety. The event will also hold stalls and accessories, activities for children and food will be supplied by the Racecourse.

The Gloucestershire BikeSafe team consisting of Inspector Paul Morrissey, PC Martyn Hillier, PS Adrian Mansell and Ursula Anderson (Internet Development and Marketing) are fully supported and assisted by the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCIA) and by the DfT (Department for Transport). As Gloucestershire Constabulary are running a national event, help has been provided and welcomed from the two organisations.

The show has already been publicised in a national arena at the NEC Bike Show and further publicity will be carrried out by the MCIA, DfT, through local dealers and press. A police website will be designed to promote rider safety information/initiatives and will highlight specific roads in Gloucestershire where serious accidents occur.

The aim of the website is to keep motorcyclists safe on the roads with valuable information about how to steer clear from danger. In years 2000 - 2003 Gloucestershire had 262 fatal/serious motorbike casualties.
