ARENA ESSEX have taken another step forward in their team building with the signing of Leigh Lanham.

The Ipswich-based rider will celebrate his testimonial at Purfleet on Friday April 8 after two washouts last season. Hammers boss Ronnie Russell said: ''Leigh is an integral part of our plans and we''re pleased to once again have him on board for next season. He has a very important role to play.''

ANDY Smith is on his way back to Belle Vue - 22 years after he started his career with the club! The former Grand Prix rider agreed a return to Manchester after holding talks with both Peterborough and Edinburgh. Aces boss Ian Thomas said: ''I''m sure this signing will surprise a few. I was in the office in the old Hyde Road stadium in 1982 when Andy first signed for the club.''

INDOOR experts Bobby Schwartz and Shawn McConnell will be aiming for a fifth successive Brighton Pairs title this Sunday. The American duo are massive favourites with the fans at the Brighton Centre and were quick to signal their desire to return this year. Brighton Bonanza promoter Jon Cook said: ''These guys are legends. They are a pleasure to deal with but a real handful for their opponents!''

CRAIG Boyce is on his way back to the Isle of Wight for a second successive season. The Australian international was a revelation in his first year with the Premier League club. Co-promoter Dave Pavitt said: ''He was absolutely excellent for us last year, home and away, and finished the season on a 9.68 average. We were very pleased with that and I can only see that improving.''

SOMERSET have completed their top three for next season with the return of Glenn Cunningham. Cunningham was voted last season''s Rebels rider of the year and the club are expecting even bigger things from the Bristol-based rider in 2005. Co-promoter Pete Toogood said: ''Glenn was invincible around our home track last season and if he steps his form up away he will be an even better rider.''
