GORE-TEX® XCR® MOTORCYCLE WEAR – A NEW DIMENSION IN COMFORT
15 May 2004 - W. L. GORE & Associates GmbH
EXtended Comfort Range is not only available to the outdoor cloth-ing market anymore, but to the motorcycle segment as well.
Membrane technology specialist W.L. Gore is presenting together with its partners the new, revolutionary GORE-TEX® XCR® motorcycle garments for the 2005 season, and in so doing, is guaranteeing all motorcycle fans considerably more comfort and well-being, especially in the summer months. The completely newly-developed 3-layer GORE-TEX® XCR® laminates, designed based on the specific needs of motorriders, are very breathable, durable, wind and waterproof, and will be available in stretch fabric, in four leather and six textile variants. Exclusive launch partners to the market introduction of the product will be BMW, Dainese, Hein Gericke, IXS, Dane, Kushitani, Stadler and Rukka. Milestones At the beginning of the 1990s, Gore successfully introduced its wind and waterproof but breathable GORE-TEX® membrane technology onto the motorcycling market. In 2000, with its extremely abrasion resistant GORE-TEX® ARMACOR™ laminate, Gore brought out the first wind and water-proof, breathable touring suit in the world with “all-round impact protec-tion”. In 2001, the next highlight appeared: with its GORE-TEX® Leather Laminate, Gore was the first manufacturer to succeed in combining the benefits of a textile suit with the properties of a leather suit. With the new GORE-TEX® XCR®- Laminates, Gore is now setting the next milestone in the area of function and safety for motorcyclists. GORE-TEX® XCR® Motorcycle wear – Greater comfort for touring motorriders At first, from heat as in the recent summers, dripping with sweat under your suit, then dripping wet and frozen from a sudden rainstorm and cold snap. To be securely protected against all changes in temperature and whims of the weather on a single trip seems to have been an impossible task for manufacturers of motorcycle garments until now. But now the product specialists at Gore have succeeded in developing the solution: the new GORE-TEX® XCR® motorcycle garments. Through their in-creased breathability, especially in the temperature range between 10 and 30 degrees Celsius, these garments provide an optimally comfortable riding climate and perfect lasting protection against the weather. The tar-get group of the new material is above all the demanding touring and sport motorcyclists who are underway in different climatic zones and ter-rains. Commuters who are exposed to constant high temperature varia-tions in their frequent stop-and-go on the road, and are therefore looking for maximum breathability and weather protection. Always dry, always lightweight The breathability of the garments is the result of the completely new, pat-ented GORE-TEX® XCR® membrane technology and the optimal combi-nation of the materials, so as to achieve around 25% higher (RET value below 13) breathability compared with current 3-layer laminates. Further-more, the new laminate has a considerably shorter drying time of the in-ternal layers– that is, the moisture that has collected in the jacket from extreme physical exertion will be transported out around two times as quickly. The rider therefore feels considerably less moisture on his skin and for this reason simply feels more comfortable in hotter temperatures. He remains more concentrated, a factor which ultimately also has a real impact on his active safety. A high level of passive safety is ensured by the robust 3-layer design with high-quality outer materials such as Cordura, Kevlar or leather, which all have excellent abrasion resistant attributes. Furthermore, these outer materials have been finished with a special du-rable waterrepellent finish, meaning the garment cannot absorb any mois-ture and so always remains pleasantly lightweight. Guaranteed quality In order that the new GORE-TEX® XCR® motorcycle wear is able to live up to the promises of its guarantee, “ GORE-TEX® GUARANTEED TO KEEP YOU DRY®”, all prototypes from Gore’s customers have been tested in our “rain tower” under a high pressure shower. And in order to test whether the waterproofness held after longer use as well, the wear and tear is simulated: GORE-TEX® XCR® laminates are flexed and abraded for 500 hours under the harshest conditions in ag-gressive, special washing machines and their waterproofness checked again. Wide market launch In June, the product will be introduced for the first time in Europe in Bas-sella (Spain) to selected international dealers, as well as the trade press. In September, GORE-TEX® XCR® motorcycle garments will have its sec-ond major public outing, this time at the Intermot in Munich. Its entry onto the motorcycle market will also be supported through numerous, atten-tion-grabbing marketing initiatives. Planned are Europe-wide mailing campaigns to the retailers, training, commercial advertising, sales promo-tion activities, Point-of-Sale and merchandising measures, advertise-ments in the trade and specialist press, an end-user brochure, as well as special motorcycle trophies, during which both retailers and selected end-users can be convinced through first-hand practical experience of the top-quality properties of the new Gore products.
