GSX-R CUP FINAL: A SUZUKI SPECTACLE OF WORLD-CLASS RACING
28 October 2004 - Suzuki GB PLC

UK riders Tristan Palmer and Ben Wilson put on a valiant display of racing in the worldwide Suzuki GSX-R Cup Final, held from October 14th to 17th 2004, at Road Atlanta in the USA.

Palmer pulled off a hard-fought sixth-place finish, and Wilson managed a respectable 14th.

As a mark of their talent, the Knotts Buildbase and Vivaldi Suzuki riders had never before ridden on the Road Atlanta circuit. The GSX-R Cup Final takes place over two races; Palmer took fifth and seventh places, while Wilson recovered from a first-race crash to finish eighth in the second race.

Palmer (pictured) commented: “I’m happy with the result but I felt I could have gone better in the opening race. I lost my knee slider whilst being chased by Brian Stokes and that slowed me. Ben (Wilson) caught me up and we had a great race, as we normally do. I’m really pleased that Javier Fores won the second race as he was clearly the best rider here and he deserved it.”

Wilson said: “I’m disappointed with my first-race crash. I really don’t know what happened, apart from the front end breaking away. We rushed around to rebuild a machine for the second race but the settings weren’t quite right. I’m pleased with the event and impressed at the amount or talent and it was good to see the European riders – who have never raced the circuit – do so well against the American and Canadians, who are used to this circuit.”

The event was won by American Robert Jenson, who took first and second places, ahead of fellow countryman Jake Holden, followed by South African Hudson Kennaugh; German Martin Bauer; and Spanish hero Javier Fores.

Teenager Fores suffered a fuel-starvation problem in the opening race and was forced to retire whilst leading on the opening lap. Putting misfortune out of his mind for the second leg, he came back to dominate, earning the popular title ‘rider of the event’.
