TEAMS SAY GOODBYE TO TAYLOR
Retiring Suzuki team manager Garry Taylor was honoured with a special presentation at Valencia on Friday night, from team’s association IRTA. “Garry was one of the founder members of IRTA and has made a very valuable contribution over the years,” said IRTA boss Paul Butler, before presenting him with a bronze scale model of a motorcycle. “We will also really miss his humour,” he added. Taylor was also presented with an abstract painting of trees in winter. “It looks just like me,” he quipped. Taylor is the longest-serving racing team manager, holding the position with Suzuki for 22 years, and associated with the team for seven years before that. His first contact, and his first motorcycle GP, was in 1976 when Barry Sheene won the first of his two World Championships with Suzuki. His record of 378 GPs is 60 per cent of all races in the top class, and includes 57 GP wins, 154 podium finishes and 56 pole positions – plus two more World Championships, with Kevin Schwantz in 1993 and Kenny Roberts Jr. in 2000.
