Germans love big bikes

Even in a unified Europe people''s tastes are different. This is true as well for the choice of motorcycles as a comparison of German and European Top Ten Bikes shows. According to this, German riders seem to prefer motorcycles with large engines. With the models BMW 1200 GS, Yamaha YZF-R1, Honda CBR Fireblade, Suzuki GSF 1200 and Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R there are 5 models with a cubic capacity of at least 1,000cc among the Top Ten from January to July 2004. The European Top Ten only lists two motorcycles of this category within the same period of time: the Yamaha R1 and the Honda Fireblade. Maybe the reasons for the German preference of high-capacity engines are the well-built highways, attractive country roads and – last not least – the fact that German bikers like travelling by motorbike.

In return the European Top Ten contains three vehicles from the scooter segment: Honda SH 150 (second position), Piaggio Beverly 250 (rank 7) and Yamaha Tmac 500 (rank 10), a category that does not appear at all in the German Top Ten. Obviously, this vehicle group is more often used as a daily means of transport in Mediterranean countries with a more moderate climate than in Germany. The very popular segment of enduros and travel enduros in Germany could not place in the European Top Ten at all.

The most popular motorcycle in Europe is a sportive allrounder, the Yamaha Fazer 600. From the same market segment come the CBF 600 (rank 4), and the Hornet 600 (rank 8) from Honda, and the Suzuki Bandit 600 model. As true supersports models the Yamaha R1 (rank 3), and the Honda models CB 600 F (rank 6) and Fireblade (rank 9) found their place. The Kawasaki Z 750 as a representative of naked bikes completes the fifth rank in the European Top Ten from January to June 2004.
