NUMBERS OF MOTORCYCLES IN USE REACH HISTORIC PEAK
13 September 2004 - Industrie-Verband Motorrad Deutschland e. V.

For the first time more than 5.3 million powered two-wheelers on German roads

For the first time in history the number of motorcycles in use has exceeded 5.3 million on January 1st, 2004. The exact figure of 5,306,021 vehicles contains 3,744,763 motorcycles, lightweight motorcycles and scooters of more than 50cc as well as 1,561,258 mopeds, small motorcycles and power-assisted bicycles up to 50cc. Thus a historic peak has been reached.

Almost 25 per cent of motorized two-wheelers of more than 125cc comes from the class up to 499cc. The market segment of motorcycles of 500-749cc covers 36.6 per cent of all motorcycles in use. Most motorcycles on German roads have 750cc or more cubic capacity. They now reach a share of 38.5 per cent. It is in this segment that with a plus of 4.9 per cent the highest gain was recorded.

A long-term analysis of scooters and motorcycles in use in Germany clearly shows the triumphant advance of powered two-wheelers since 1972. Today, the means of transport of former days has become a way of life and has established as an essential part in our ''mobile'' society.

With more than 61 motorcycles and scooters per 1,000 inhabitants Bavaria has kept and enlarged its leading position in motorcycle density among Germany''s federal states. In Rhineland-Palatinate (54 vehicles) and Baden-Württemberg (53 vehicles) motorcycle density augmented as well. A similar trend could be registered for the new federal states.
