FOR SAFER WINTER DRIVING - BIKERS: LIGHTEN UP
26 November 2004 - Bikesure

Those hardy souls who carry on motorbiking through the winter months are used to being warned about road conditions, the right clothing and maintaining their bikes.

But Bikesure has been studying its winter stats in the light of the MAIDS report earlier this year and the company says that absolutely the most important potential life saver is: make sure you can be seen.

“MAIDS showed that in 50% of accidents involving a motorbike, the main fault lay with the other driver. And in over 70% of those cases, the other driver’s main error was that, essentially, they didn’t notice the bike,” says Robert Balls of Bikesure. “We all know the problems of light in winter: not only the lack of it, because of the shorter days, but also the problem of visibility against low winter sun.

“In winter, it’s more vital than ever that bikers do everything they can to make sure other drivers know they are there.”

As Bikesure points out, there are a few easy and obvious ways to stay highly visible – but it’s important to remember them every trip.

· Keep headlights on all the time
· Wear light, bright colours
· Wear reflective jackets
· Use your horn

“Whatever the conditions, night or day, making sure you are as visible as possible is going to make a major contribution to your safety on a bike this winter,” says Robert Balls.

Bikesure has a huge range of specialist policies for the motorcycle enthusiast, including schemes for trikes and quads.
