SPEEDWAY NEWS - 24.11.04
24 November 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association

1992 World Champion Gary Havelock has been named as Arena-Essex''s first new signing for the 2005 season.

The double British Champion has ridden for Peterborough in the last two seasons, and joins Mark Loram as a confirmed starter for the Hammers. Arena boss Ronnie Russell said: ''I am pleased that Gary has chosen to join us. He guested for us on one occasion in 2004 and he liked what he saw.''

BELLE VUE promoter Ian Thomas feels he has pulled off a ''steal of a deal'' by persuading Jason Lyons to return to the club for next season. Lyons saw his average plummet during a confidence-sapping spell at Poole but finished the season strongly in the Premer League with Newcastle. Thomas said: ''Getting him back like this is a steal and a massive boost to our team-building plans.''

EASTBOURNE have confirmed that Australian star Adam Shields will remain with the club next year - and are planning a major announcement on Friday. Shields was always expected to return to Arlington having signed a two-year contract with the Eagles last winter. Promoter Jon Cook is known to have been considering his options at the top of his line-up and will confirm a big signing at the end of the week.

NEWCASTLE have commenced their rebuilding plans for 2005 by snapping up former Berwick favourite Josef Franc. Promoter Darryl Illingworth said: ''Josef has been one of our big targets, and to be able to announce that he has agreed to join us is superb news. ''He is a fine little rider with bags of enthusiasm and a real love of the Brough Park track.''
