PERFECT WEATHER PROTECTION WITH CONSIDERABLY GREATER COMFORT
09 January 2004 - W. L. GORE & Associates GmbH

The weather is changing. Average temperatures are rising and hot summers like the ones of recent years will become increasingly common.

And yet nothing remains as unpredictable as the weather. Motorriders can tell you a thing or two about that: first dripping with sweat under your suit when it''s hot, then dripping wet and frozen from a sudden rainstorm and cold snap. To guarantee the protection of motorriders against all temperature changes and whims of the weather seems to have been an almost impossible task for manufacturers of motorcycle garments until now. But the product specialists at Gore have now come up with the solution: the new GORE-TEX® XCR® motorcycle garments, which will be available in the shops in 2005. It guarantees all motorcycle enthusiasts considerably greater comfort and well-being, especially in the hot season, as well as perfect weather protection through its completely new, very breathable, durable wind and waterproof GORE-TEX® XCR® membrane technology.

EXtended Comfort Range for touringriders

Comfort is about feeling good - it''s neither too hot nor too cold when riding on your machine. This is hard to achieve, when, for example, as a touring or sports motorcyclist, you''re often on the road under varying weather conditions, or as one of the many commuters, you''re also exposed to constant high variations in temperature on your frequent stop-and-go''s. However, it is for precisely these riders that the completely newly-developed and patented 3-layer GORE-TEX® XCR® laminates have been made.

The new GORE laminates always provide an optimally comfortable climate for the user, including perfect and lasting protection against the elements, especially in outdoor temperatures between 10 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Decisive for this new and considerably raised standard of comfort compared with the conventional materials is the higher breathability of the GORE-TEX® XCR® laminates.

Always dry, always lightweight

Through a new and patented GORE-TEX® XCR® membrane technology, combined with the optimal combination of the materials, the Gore engineers have succeeded in increasing the breathability of the garment compared with current, 3-layer laminates by 25 percent. With a RET value (official technology standard for comfort, indicating a textile fabric''s resistance to water vapour) of below 13, the new GORE-TEX® XCR® garments are deemed to have a high level of breathability. And what''s more, the new laminate gives you a much shorter drying time of the internal layers'' that is, the moisture that has collected in the jacket from extreme physical exertion will be transported out around twice as quickly. Of course, you won''t sweat any less for this, but you''ll feel far less moisture on your skin and therefore will simply feel more comfortable, including in hot weather. You''ll remain more concentrated, something which ultimately also has a real impact on your active safety. A high level of passive safety is ensured by the robust 3-layer design with high-quality outer materials such as Cordura, Kevlar or leather, which all have excellent abrasion resistant properties. These outer materials have also been finished with a special durable water repellent finish, meaning the garment cannot absorb any water and so always remains pleasantly lightweight.

Guaranteed lasting quality

In order that the new GORE-TEX® XCR® motorcycle wear is able to live up to the promises of its guarantee, '' GORE-TEX® GUARANTEED TO KEEP YOU DRY®'', all prototypes from Gore customers have been tested in our ''rain tower'' under a high pressure shower. And in order to test whether the waterproofness held after longer use as well, the wear and tear is simulated: the GORE-TEX® XCR® laminates are flexed and abraded for 500 hours under the harshest conditions in aggressive, special washing machines and their waterproofness checked again.

Milestones

At the beginning of the 1990s, Gore successfully introduced its wind and waterproof but breathable GORE-TEX® membrane technology onto the motorcycling market. In 2000, with its extremely abrasion resistant GORE-TEX® ARMACOR(TM) laminate, Gore brought out the first wind and waterproof, breathable touring suit in the world with ''all-round impact protection''. In 2001, the next highlight appeared: with its GORE-TEX® Leather Laminate, Gore was the first manufacturer to succeed in combining the benefits of a textile suit with the properties of a leather suit. With its new GORE-TEX® XCR®- Laminates, which are available in stretch material from well-known manufacturers (BMW, Dainese, Hein Gericke, IXS, Stadler, Dane, Kushitani and Rukka) in very comfortable textile and leather variants, Gore is now setting yet another milestone in function and safety for motorcyclists.
