ELITE League clubs will be hit with a £5000 fine if they fail to fulfill their knockout cup fixtures next season.
British Speedway vice-chairman Chris Van Straaten said: ''As a league we were embarrassed by the farce surrounding the knockout cup last season which saw clubs go through by default. ''I hope this move will ensure the cut-off dates are met by clubs in this prestigious competition.'' NEW British Speedway Chairman Pete Toogood has revealed how the Premier League clubs were strongly in favour of retaining a 45-point limit. He said: ''It was reported that the league was split down the middle in a vote on this subject but not so much at the AGM. ''The limit works well for the league as a product and clubs can now get on with building their teams.'' OXFORD boss Nigel Wagstaff believes the Elite League will prove to be a stronger product next season. Clubs have voted in a new 42.5 points limit for teams to be built in 2005. Wagstaff said: ''It means the league will be a fair bit stronger than last season and I''m sure the fans will approve of that. It will, however, also put our costs up in my opinion.''
