GOODWOOD CLIMBS TO NEW HEIGHTS
23 June 2004 - BMW Motorrad GB
Over the years, the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed has grown in popularity and expanded to become one of the world’s most unique motorsport gatherings.
At no other event, anywhere in the world, will the enthusiast see such an immense assembly of sporting legends and stars. These heroes of the past and present flock to the gentle green pastures of Sussex to relive the golden years of their sports. But, of almost equal importance, to the motorsport aficionado, is the vast selection of historic and exotic racing machinery that will be in action and on display. It is a three-day event that harks back to when gentlemen were players but looks forward to a continuation of the modern era of professionalism, technology and glamour. BMW Motorrad will support the Festival of Speed by bringing some of its iconic machinery to the event. Taking part in the traditional hill climb will be such famous machines as the 1986 Dakar race bike (ridden by Eddie Howe); the late John Deacon’s R900 RR (with Nick Ashley aboard); and all the way from BMW Motorrad AG is a 1999 F650 RR, which will be ridden by the German company’s Managing Director, Dr Herbert Diess. BMW Motorrad GB will also display a selection of its historic and current ground breaking, off-road motorcycles. This range of machinery is firmly rooted in the early Eighties when BMW’s (then) revolutionary R80 G/S created a new genre of powerhouse endurance machines. Alongside the R80 will be an all-conquering R900 RR, a Dakar F650 RR, a current R1150 GS Adventure, and the dynamic new R1200 GS. Also on sale and display will be the current BoxerCup range of merchandise and clothing. Four-wheel BMW supporters and enthusiasts are catered for with a display of cars, merchandise and items from the BMW Lifestyle range – which will also be on sale. This year’s event has the theme “Young Chargers, Old Masters” and will take place during the weekend of 25-27 June, commencing on Friday 25th at 10am with free practice for racing cars. One of the day’s highlights will undoubtedly be the Goodwood Gravity Racing Club’s Soapbox Challenge, official practice session. Official practice for the famous hill climb will be on Saturday and the timed event will be staged on Sunday. More detailed information may be obtained on the Goodwood website www.goodwood.co.uk Entry to the event will be by advanced ticket only. Tickets are in great demand and spectators are advised to book early. Customers can call BMW’s information line on 0800 777 155 or visit www.bmw-motorrad.co.uk.
