KURT NICOLL: 2004 AMA SUPERMOTO UNLIMITED CHAMPION

Kurt Nicoll celebrated his 40th birthday a few days early by coming from behind in the point standings to win the 2004 AMA Supermoto Unlimited Championship.

The Red Bull KTM rider, who is also KTM’s International Racing Team Manager, took the victory Saturday in the Unlimited class of the AMA Red Bull Supermoto A-Go-Go after passing teammate and series leader Jurgen Kunzel whose bike suffered a flat rear tire halfway through the final.

Nicoll, who turned 40 on Monday, Nov. 15, was ecstatic after winning the championship. “It’s only taken forty years to win a championship,” joked Nicoll. “Just wait till I’m older and have some more experience! Jurgen was obviously very, very unlucky, and I feel for him. When he looked back at his tire, I thought he was just letting me by because he would still be able to finish second and win the championship. But then I saw him dropping back, and I felt for him. But he’s twelve years younger than me, so he’s got time to win more championships; I’m just happy when I wake up in the morning.

“This whole series has just been incredible for me, and the bike’s been fantastic. I’d like to thank all my mechanics. With KTM we build the greatest bikes and we come out here to show it, and I think we showed it again today. Red Bull has done an awesome job -- they sponsor a bunch of our racing activities, and this event is just fantastic.”

Nicoll’s victory in Las Vegas was his third of the season. In addition to the Las Vegas final he also took wins in the Reno street race and South Boston Speedway. The Brit is a former leading World Championship Motocross rider. He finished runner-up in the 500cc Motocross World Championships four times in the late 1980s and early ‘90s.

Nicoll finished in front of former AMA Motocross great Micky Dymond. Ben Carlson was third. Kunzel, who led the series all year, dropped to fourth after his Las Vegas DNF.

Nicoll’s Red Bull KTM squad with Kunzel and Boris Chambon won the Unlimited Team Championship. HMC Racing was second and All Access Racing took third.
