CDI VERDICT ON THE EVERTS CASE
19 November 2004 - Yamaha Racing

The International Disciplinary Court (CDI), convened today at the FIM headquarters in Mies, Switzerland.

In a public hearing in order to judge the request lodged to the CDI by the International Jury of the South African Motocross Grand Prix held in Sun City on September 26, to impose sanctions against Stefan Everts and Mickael Pichon for their involvement in the riders'' protest causing a 10-minute delay before the first MX1 race. Everts and Pichon were the only riders reported by the International Jury of the South African Motocross Grand Prix. The riders protested against the 2005 plans of championship promoter Youthstream to withdraw prize money. The second MX1 race of the South African GP saw an unfortunate ending for Everts when Pichon went into Stefan''s bike causing Everts to crash. In a reaction of disappointment and anger after his crash Stefan threw his goggles at Pichon. The CDI judged Stefan Everts for his behaviour during the second race of the MX1 class in a separate case.

The CDI took the following decisions: In the first case, Stefan Everts and Mickael Pichon are sanctioned with a fine of CHF 10.000 each. In the second case, the sanctions against Stefan Everts are a suspension of one year, conditionally deferred for a period of 2 years, and a fine of CHF 15.000. The costs of the procedure are to be borne by Stefan Everts (75%) and Mickael Pichon (25%). An appeal may be lodged against this decision within 5 days following the written notification.

Stefan Everts commented: ''It''s hard to accept the judgement the CDI made in the case of the riders'' protest because the decision not to start was made as a group by all regular GP riders. As a world champion I was merely the spokesperson of the group. For the second case I accept the fact that I get sanctioned for my acts. My reaction was too strong, and it''s something that will never happen again.''
