WIN A TRACKDAY AT CASTLE COMBE
23 June 2009 - Avon Tyres

Avon Tyres celebrates 100 years of UK tyre manufacture

Avon Tyres is celebrating all that is ‘Best of British’ on two and four wheels, with a poster campaign and the chance to win some great prizes.

Avon Tyres, a Cooper Tire & Rubber Company brand, is based in Great Britain and have been making car and motorcycle tyres at their base in Melksham, Wiltshire, for 100 years.

All you have to do to celebrate with Avon is to log on to www.avon-tyres.co.uk. Bikers can win a trackday at Castle Combe on Avon VP2 tyres, while visitors to the car site can win VIP hospitality tickets to the season finale of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship at Brands Hatch on September 20.

Runners-up from each competition will be given the chance to win exclusive limited-edition Avon watches.

Avon’s European managing director, Julian Baldwin, said: “We are extremely proud of Avon Tyres’ British heritage, both as a manufacturer and a prime mover in the world of motorsport. Two years ago, our parent company’s faith in the quality of our British engineering skills was illustrated by the siting of the firm’s entire European design and technical centre in Melksham.”

Graham Matcham, Head of Motorcycle Sales said: “All of Avon''s motorcycle tyres have been made in Britain for almost 100 years and we see no reason to change that. Our tyres are designed, engineered and manufactured in Great Britain and the knowledge base of bikers and test riders here is second to none. It’s important to us that our customers know that, while the brand may be owned by a US company, they can still be patriotic by buying Avon.”

The double poster campaign features the product of another legendary British firm – a Triumph Thruxton – shod with the latest Avon Roadrider rubber making the pairing a distinctly British combination. Likewise, the car version shows one of the Aston Martin DBRS9 racing cars that competes in Avon’s flagship motor racing series, the Avon Tyres British GT Championship.

Like Triumph and Aston, Avon Tyres has a long and distinguished history, having been designing and manufacturing tyres for over 100 years and building its first motorcycle tyre in 1911.

Since that first motorcycle tyre, champions such as Geoff Duke, John Surtees, Mike Hailwood and Barry Sheene used and won on Avon, and more recently Avon riders have won 13 Supersport and 4 Production championships, as well as Isle of Man TT victories on both two and three wheels.

Avon’s car racing heritage is every bit as strong – spanning more than six decades at every level of motorsport, from grassroots to international racing. Avon Tyres first competed at the Le Mans 24 Hours in the 1950s, and was awarded long-term official supply contracts with the British Formula 3 Championship and the F1 Grand Prix-supporting International Formula 3000 Championship.

With some 150 champions crowned every year on Avon tyres, the likes of Ayrton Senna, Jenson Button, Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard are just some of countless stars who have all cut their teeth racing on Avon’s racing rubber.

Today, Avon’s century of excellence has led to its latest premium tyre, the ZV5. Designed with high-performance cars and family hatchbacks alike, and offering superb road-holding and predictable handling characteristics, the ZV5 was designed and is manufactured entirely in the UK.

Today, Avon Tyres’ century of excellence has led to its latest range of VP2 road tyres – specifically designed for the performance of modern motorcycles. The VP2 comes in three versions: Xtreme for trackdays, Supersport for track and road use and Sport for road-biased riding. These tyres head-up a dozen tyres in the Avon range, which cover every machine from sports bikes to big trailies to scooters.
