MUSEUM WILL BE BACK TO ITS GLORIOUS BEST
14 November 2004 - The National Motorcycle Museum
The National Motorcycle Museum, which has long been recognised as the finest motorcycle museum in the world, is counting down the days until it reopens again on December 1.
Since the devastating fire last September staff and contractors at the Birmingham based museum have been working flat out on the £20 million-plus renovation, which has included restoring many of the museum’s facilities and world famous bikes, as well as the introduction of a £1.2 million sprinkler system. The comprehensive cross section of machines on display at the museum has always been its biggest attraction, resulting in visitor figures reaching 250,000 a year. However, these figures are expected to increase with the development and expansion of the conference and banqueting facilities – some of which are available now. The Motorcycle Museum’s development manager, Nick Hartland, said: The transformation since the tragedy of the fire in September 2003, which saw the virtual destruction of the complex, has been incredible. Reconstruction has been undertaken by the Museum itself with no outside main contractor. The team of specialist sub-contractors and staff have worked in unison to achieve the remarkable recovery and opening date in December 2004. “The extended conference and banqueting facilities have also been transformed in order for us to offer the best in AV equipment and delegate satisfaction. The Museum has developed into a focal point for the British motorcycle movement and come December the complex really will be known as a place where “Legends Live On” The Museum first opened its doors in 1984 and is home to more than 800 machines, which are all fully restored to manufacturers’ original specifications, bringing to life a catalogue of the golden age of British motorcycling. Mr Hartland said the museum was already offering a limited conference service, with three suites and a temporary exhibition hall in operation and is currently taking bookings for conferences, seminars and events after December 1. One of the Museums’ most famous exhibits – the five times TT winning works Triumph nicknamed “Slippery Sam” is back after its total rebuild by the factory race shop mechanics who built it originally. Other important exhibits have been sourced worldwide; including all the race dominating works rotary Nortons’ of the late eighties and early nineties.
