FOR ONE DAY ONLY, CADWELL PARK IS TURNING OFF ITS ENGINES AND PUTTING ITS SKATES ON.
22 January 2008 - MotorSport Vision

Gravity Racing Festival visits the circuit on Sunday 3 February.

The festival features skateboarders, soapbox racers and BMX cyclists competing in various events including:

Street Luge – riders steer their skateboard down the track feet first using their bodyweight to guide the board, reaching speeds of up to 70mph!

Skateboard Slalom – skateboarders are timed as they traverse a course of cones

Downhill Street Luge – one of the best spectator events, riders stand or kneel on long skateboards to get the most aerodynamic positions for speed skating on the circuit

Gravity Bike –split into stock and ¾ fairing classes, these BMX bikes have no pedal or chain and lower handlebars to make them into racing bikes!

Gravity Racer – riders take to the track in homebuilt go-kart style racers, more technologically advanced than a soapbox racer, in a trial against the clock.

The Gravity Racer competition will be particularly hotly contested this year, with entries from the Honda F1 Apprentices, Lola, MG Owners Club, Vauxhall and Lotus. Geoff Burton, organiser of the Gravity Racing Festival, said: “The Gravity Racers are becoming more high tech and better designed in competitors’ search for a win. They are immensely popular and competitors flock from across Europe to take part in the festival.”

Closer to home, the Oasis Academy in Immingham – which specialises in engineering, business and enterprise - has also been building a Gravity Racer. Although it won’t be ready until the 2009 event, the school is planning to incorporate the machine into the curriculum, using it in lessons including PE, science and maths, as well as an enrichment scheme with local primary schools.

In addition, a group of ICT pupils at the Oasis Academy have produced posters for this year’s festival as part of their coursework, and they will be filming the contest on the day. Paul Fairlie, Assistant Principal of Specialism at the Oasis Academy, said: “ICT needed a theme for their coursework and, as I wanted the Gravity Racer to be a focus for the school, it seemed appropriate. I want as many pupils to be involved with the racer in as many different ways as possible.”

Organiser Geoff Burton added: “We are thrilled that the Oasis Academy has embraced the Gravity Racing Festival, as we wanted the local community to be involved in this unusual and exciting event. The sight of skateboards and soapbox racers on a motor racing circuit is highly entertaining, and we hope people will come along and enjoy this fun, low cost day out at Cadwell.”

Tickets for the Gravity Racing Festival at Cadwell Park on Sunday 3 February cost just £2 per person or £5 per car. For more information call 0870 950 9000, visit www.cadwell park.co.uk or www.appleheadgravitysport.co.uk.
