YOUNG RIDERS ARE GETTING OFF THEIR SCOOTERS
10 November 2004 - ChoiceQuote

Statistics from one of the UK’s biggest on-line insurers for scooters show a dramatic decrease in numbers of young riders and small capacity machines over the past two years.

The figures, compiled by ChoiceQuote insurance, are based upon the profiles of customers who request a quote and provides a snapshot of the current state of the market. These statistics suggest that it is not only the sales of new scooters that are decreasing (by 29% in the same period, according to industry figures), but that there is a general down turn in the market, primarily caused by young riders getting OFF their scooters!

Highlights of the ChoiceQuote survey are as follow.

· Small capacity machines account for a shrinking share of the market; 50cc sector plummets by over 50% in 2 years.

· Riders aged 16-20 have also fallen by over 50%, suggesting that there are fewer young scooter/moped riders on the road.

· Conversely, riders over 35 have increased their market share by 75% 2002-4.

· The most common av. value is £1-3000 but machines worth <£1000 decrease while those worth £3-5000 double. This supports the theory that the scooter sector is decreasing.

· There was an increase in demand for quotes for Piaggio & Peugeot. This is probably explained by the gradual withdrawl of free/discounted insurance deals on new machines.

There are some interesting facts about the social make-up of motorcycling during the period.

· The number of married riders has halved and the number of single riders has doubled.

· The one area in which there has been no change is the proportion of female riders, which remains at 1 in 10, most of whom are un-married.
