MACMILLAN CANCER RELIEF UK TOUR SUPPORTED BY BMW DONATION
04 November 2004 - BMW Motorrad GB
Macmillan Cancer Relief is reaching out to people affected by cancer thanks to a £50,000 donation from BMW Group.
Motor manufacturer BMW has made the donation to Macmillan to help fund its Mobile Cancer Information Centre tour, which takes Macmillan''s information and support services out into the local community to people who may not know where to find this information, or may not feel comfortable trying to get it. The Macmillan Mobile Cancer Information Centre has just completed its fourth annual tour visiting 30 locations across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Almost 25,000 visitors will have received advice from the centre in the last four years. In addition, in November, it will visit six BMW locations across the UK and be open to almost 9,000 BMW employees. The BMW visits are particularly relevant as the company has a high percentage of male employees. Men consider the centre more approachable than other sources of information, such as their GPs, because of its informal and anonymous basis. The centre is staffed by Macmillan Cancer Information Specialists who can offer visitors information and support according to their individual needs, and is open to anyone whether they have a cancer diagnosis or are visiting on behalf of a friend or relative. Peter Cardy, Chief Executive of Macmillan Cancer Relief, said: ''Every day 739 people in the UK are told they have cancer. More than one million people in the UK today have had a cancer diagnosis, and more than one in three will be diagnosed at some time in their life. BMW''s generous donation will help to fund the vital work of the Macmillan Mobile Cancer Information Centre which helps to empower people affected by cancer with one of the most powerful weapons against the disease, knowledge.'' Jim O''Donnell, managing director, BMW (GB) Ltd said: ''BMW Group is delighted to offer support to Macmillan Cancer Relief. We have all been touched by cancer in some way either directly or through family, friends or work colleagues. Macmillan provides excellent support and makes a real difference to those people affected by cancer.'' Cancer information and support is also available from the Macmillan CancerLine on freephone 0808 808 2020 (Mon-Fri, 9am to 6pm) or log on to www.macmillan.org.uk
